If you've lived in Murfreesboro for a while, you remember MAC. For seventeen years the building at 710 Memorial Blvd was the gym this city grew up with. Then the sign changed. Now it has changed back, and the club behind it has been rebuilt from the floors up. Here's the whole story, and what it means for you.

2004 to 2021: a Murfreesboro staple

Murfreesboro Athletic Club opened in 2004 as the city's full-service athletic club: a big weight floor, courts, classes, and locker rooms with saunas, all under one roof. It became a staple fast. For a lot of people in town, MAC was where you met your training partner, where your kids learned to shoot free throws, where you ran into half your neighborhood on a Saturday morning. It was a network as much as a gym, and it stayed that way for seventeen years.

2021 to 2025: the Avalon years

In 2021 the club was sold and rebranded as Avalon Athletic Club. The focus shifted toward in-house personal training, and the building got some real work during this period: walls came down to open up the floor, sight lines improved, and new equipment came in. Plenty of members stayed through the change, and the bones of the facility got better because of it.

2025: the MAC is back

In 2025 the club was sold again, this time to a family that wanted to bring the original name home and finish what the building deserved. The upgrades since then have been the biggest in the club's history:

  • New gym flooring across the training areas.
  • New locker room flooring in both the men's and women's locker rooms.
  • Fresh paint throughout the facility.
  • 1Self is now part of MAC. We acquired the 1Self recovery business and folded it into the club as our recovery studio, so cryotherapy, red light, infrared sauna, and compression live under the same roof as your workout.
  • Kidz Club is back, one of the most requested features from longtime members.
  • The name. Murfreesboro Athletic Club is back on the sign, where it belongs.

The recovery studio

The 1Self acquisition is the centerpiece of the rebuild. Instead of a gym membership plus a separate recovery membership across town, it's one building and one card:

  • Whole-body cryotherapy for 2 to 3 minute sessions that reduce inflammation and speed recovery.
  • Localized cryotherapy for a sore shoulder, knee, or lower back.
  • Red light and infrared therapy for cellular repair, skin health, and reduced soreness.
  • NormaTec compression boots that flush your legs after a hard leg day or long run.
  • A red light infrared sauna, separate from the traditional saunas in each locker room.

Diamond members get four recovery sessions every month included. Everyone else can add sessions any time, and every new member gets one free to try it.

Kidz Club is back

Ask longtime members what they missed most and Kidz Club comes up every time. It's back, screen-free, staffed by CPR-certified and background-checked team members, and it's drop-in: no reservations, just check the kids in and go train. Ages 6 months through 12 years, up to two hours per visit. Kidz Club is included with Diamond membership for up to 2 kids. Read the details here.

Three simple tiers

We rebuilt the membership structure so that it's easy to understand and easy to compare:

  1. Peak, $18 bi-weekly. Full facility access: the largest weight floor in Murfreesboro, the 3,000 sq ft functional training room, basketball and racquetball courts, locker room saunas, and showers. 12-month agreement.
  2. Legacy, $32 bi-weekly. Full facility access plus unlimited group fitness classes (200+ per month), unlimited tanning, and a monthly InBody scan. 12-month agreement.
  3. Diamond, $47 bi-weekly. Everything above plus four recovery sessions a month, Kidz Club for up to 2 kids, a daily buddy pass, and towel service. No contract and no maintenance fee.

There's no enrollment fee on any tier. Peak and Legacy include a $29 maintenance fee in February and August. Compare every feature side by side.
